In its time, San José was one of the most successful mission. With 6000 converts it ranked third behind Santa Clara and San Gabriel. Its cattle ranching and farming operations were large and successful but it endured many raids and skirmishes. This is the only territory in California where the Spaniards did not first secure the cooperation of the natives through the missionaries. Consequently, they encountered strong resistance and, as a result, San José served as a base for military operations against the inland native population. Destroyed in an earthquake in 1868, its painstaking reconstruction was finally completed in 1985. Fourteenth Mission Built Founded:
