This was the first mission, founded in 1769 by Padre Serra on his expedition to Alta California with Gaspar de Portola. Because the padres wanted to distance themselves from unruly soldiers stationed at a nearby presidio, the mission was moved inland to its present location in 1774. Now designated a basilica in recognition of its historical significance, the mission is the site of California's first church, and its first cemetery, containing the graves of many native Americans.
