Santa Barbara was the first mission founded by Padre Serra's successor, Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen. Padre Serra had dedicated the site in 1782, but construction was delayed due to his ongoing difficulties with governor Felippe de Neve. DeNeve was envious of the economic and political power the Franciscans gained with the development of each mission. Destroyed by the earthquakes of 1812, the construction of the new church was based on the design of a Roman Temple circa 27 B.C., and makes Santa Barbara the only mission with twin towers.
